For nearly 30 years, the Stowe Basketry Festival has brought weavers together to explore traditional techniques, contemporary designs and basketry materials from around the world. The festival welcomes new basket makers while also challenging experienced weavers to develop new skills and expand their creativity.

Participants can look forward to several days of learning, creating and connecting with others who share an appreciation for basketry. Festival projects may include functional baskets, sculptural pieces, jewelry and decorative woven art.

A Festival for New and Experienced Weavers

One of the strengths of the Stowe Basketry Festival is the variety of techniques and materials represented in its workshops.

Previous festival programs have included instruction in:

  • Traditional reed basketry
  • Willow weaving
  • Nantucket basket construction
  • Black ash and elm bark basketry
  • Sweetgrass weaving
  • Pine-needle coiling
  • Paper basketry
  • Mad weave and twill patterns
  • Adirondack pack baskets
  • Contemporary sculptural basketry

The 2026 festival featured instructors and classes covering willow, Nantucket basketry, bark, ash, sweetgrass, pine needles, paper and traditional reed techniques. These examples demonstrate the breadth of instruction typically associated with the event, although the official 2027 teacher and class schedule has not yet been published.

The festival has a history of bringing together respected basket makers, artists, authors and instructors.

Past teachers have included Flo Hoppe, Trisha Brown, Ruth Boland, Peggy Thrasher, Mary Price, Cheryl Thomas, Dianne Stanton, Pam Philpott, Linda Scherz and Bonnie Gale.

The final 2027 instructor roster, workshop descriptions, skill levels and material fees will be announced by the Stowe Basketry Festival.
