SUMMARY:Sweetgrass Basket Weaving Workshop — Charleston\, South Carolina — May 9\, 2026
DESCRIPTION:If you enjoy basket weaving\, traditional basketry\, Southern folk art\, and hands-on weaving workshops\, the Sweetgrass Basket Weaving Workshop in Charleston\, South Carolina\, is a meaningful event to watch. This workshop is scheduled for Saturday\, May 9\, 2026\, from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at The Charleston Museum\, 360 Meeting Street\, Charleston\, SC 29403. \nThis Charleston basket weaving event focuses on the art of sweetgrass basketry\, a tradition the museum describes as an integral part of the Lowcountry’s Gullah Geechee community since the 17th century. During the class\, participants receive in-depth instruction\, hear a brief history of the craft\, and then make their own basket with guided support. The museum states that all materials and instruction are provided. \nFor readers of North Georgia Basketry\, this is the kind of regional event that connects basket making\, cultural history\, and fiber art education in a very personal way. While many basket weaving events focus mainly on technique\, this workshop also highlights the living heritage behind the work\, making it especially appealing for those interested in traditional basket weaving\, heritage crafts\, and Southeastern basketry. \nTeacher Information\nThe listed instructor is Sarah Edwards-Hammond\, a local artisan and Gullah Geechee sweetgrass basket weaver from the Charleston area. The Charleston Museum says she comes from a long line of basket makers and has passed the tradition on to her family and others in the community. \nAdditional background from other event and museum-related sources describes Sarah Edwards-Hammond as a Mount Pleasant\, South Carolina\, artist who has carried forward a family basket-making tradition for generations. The Charleston Museum has also described her family as descended from West African artists who brought the craft to the Lowcountry about 300 years ago\, and Brookgreen Gardens identifies her as a master Gullah Geechee sweetgrass basket weaver whose family tradition spans five generations. \nThat teaching background gives this workshop added value for anyone interested not only in making a basket\, but also in learning from a tradition bearer with deep cultural and family ties to the craft. For basket makers in Georgia and across the Southeast\, that makes this workshop more than a class; it is also an opportunity to experience a respected Lowcountry basketry tradition firsthand. \nRegistration and Event Details\nThe Charleston Museum lists the workshop fee as $75 for museum members and $105 for non-members. The event page notes that space is limited\, reservations are required\, and registration can be completed online or by phone. The museum also provides cancellation terms\, including advance notice requirements for refunds or transfers. \nEvent DetailsEvent: Sweetgrass Basket Weaving WorkshopDate: May 9\, 2026Time: 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.Location: The Charleston MuseumAddress: 360 Meeting Street\, Charleston\, South Carolina 29403Instructor: Sarah Edwards-Hammond \n\nSweetgrass Basket Weaving Workshop\, Charleston basket weaving workshop\, South Carolina basketry event\, sweetgrass basket class Charleston\, Gullah Geechee basket weaving\, Lowcountry basketry\, traditional basket weaving workshop\, basket weaving events near Georgia\, Southeastern basketry events\, North Georgia Basketry

DESCRIPTION:About Guilders Weave\nGuilders Weave (often called GW26 for 2026) is an adult basketry convention hosted by the Tidewater Basketry Guild of Virginia. The event runs from Thursday evening through early Sunday afternoon\, taking over the Newport News Marriott at City Center with classrooms\, hospitality\, and basketmakers from across the country. \nSmall class sizes\, a wide mix of techniques\, and a friendly “weavers helping weavers” atmosphere make Guilders Weave one of the most talked-about winter events in the U.S. basketry calendar. In recent years\, attendance has topped 175 registered students. \n\nEvent Highlights\n\n\nFour days of weaving & learningClasses start Thursday evening and continue all day Friday and Saturday\, wrapping up early Sunday afternoon. \n\n\nAdult weaving eventDesigned specifically for adult students\, with projects and pacing tailored for grown-up weavers. \n\n\nSmall class sizesMost classes are limited to around 10 students\, giving you plenty of time with your instructor. \n\n\nVariety of baskets & techniquesTeachers are selected to cover a range of techniques\, materials\, skill levels\, and price points—from classic reed and cane to creative designs and embellishments. \n\n\nMeals built into registrationThe registration fee is structured around the meals provided during the event\, with past student registrations in the mid-$100 range (exact price varies by year). \n\n\nTeacher marketplaceA dedicated teacher marketplace on Friday evening allows instructors to sell extra kits and finished work—this is the official vending time for teachers. \n\n\nPublic shopping hoursSome vendors (like The Country Seat) offer open shopping hours at Guilders Weave: typically 6–10 pm Thursday and 9–5 Friday & Saturday\, welcoming both attendees and local shoppers. \n\n\nOverflowing hospitality roomAttendees pitch in to stock a hospitality space with snacks and drinks\, so there’s always a spot to grab a nibble between rows of shaping and packing. \n\n\n\nSchedule at a Glance\n(Exact class times and offerings are set by Tidewater Basketry Guild; this is a typical pattern for GW26) \n\n\nThursday\, January 15 \n\n\nRegistration and check-in \n\n\nEvening classes: approximately 6:00–10:00 pm \n\n\n\n\nFriday\, January 16 \n\n\nFull day of classes: approximately 8:00 am–5:00 pm \n\n\nTeacher marketplace and vendor shopping in the evening \n\n\n\n\nSaturday\, January 17 \n\n\nFull day of classes: approximately 8:00 am–5:00 pm \n\n\nConvention meals and social time \n\n\n\n\nSunday\, January 18 \n\n\nMorning/early afternoon classes: approximately 8:00 am–2:00 pm \n\n\nPack-up\, goodbyes\, and travel home \n\n\n\n\n\nLocation & Lodging\nVenue & HotelNewport News Marriott at City Center740 Town Center Drive\, Newport News\, VA 23606\, USA \nGuilders Weave uses the Marriott as a one-stop convention hub: classrooms\, banquet space\, and guest rooms all in the same complex. \nTidewater Basketry Guild has arranged a special group room rate for Guilders Weave 2026: \n\n\nGroup rate: about $129 per night (plus tax) at Newport News Marriott at City Center \n\n\nGroup block dates: typically from the day before through the day after the event (January 14–19\, 2026) \n\n\nGroup rate includes enhanced breakfast on key mornings for guests in the block \n\n\nReservation deadline: the hotel link and cut-off date (for 2025 it’s listed as mid-December 2025) are posted on the official Guilders Weave page \n\n\nAlways confirm the current rate\, dates\, and booking link on the Tidewater Basketry Guild website under the Guilders Weave tab. \n\nWho Should Attend\nGuilders Weave is perfect for: \n\n\nAdult basketmakers from beginner to advanced \n\n\nWeavers who enjoy small\, focused classes \n\n\nGuild members and independent weavers looking for a winter weaving getaway \n\n\nTeachers who want to propose classes and connect with enthusiastic students \n\n\n\nRegistration & Class Info\nClass lists\, registration forms\, policies\, and teacher bios are all posted on the Guilders Weave 2026 section of the Tidewater Basketry Guild website \nBecause of the event’s popularity\, GW26 filled and closed registration quickly in 2025 updates.
