Dried hard-shell gourds can become beautiful bowls, baskets, vessels and sculptural pieces. Basket makers often enhance gourds by adding reed weaving, coiling, pine needles, leather, natural fibers, beads and decorative rims.

Why Gourd Art Is Interesting for Basket Weavers
Many of the skills used by gourd artists will already feel familiar to basket makers.
A gourd can provide the base or body of a project while the artist adds woven or coiled elements around it. The 14th Annual Mountain Gourd Gathering was held August 7–9, 2026, at the Etowah Lion’s Club in Hendersonville. The gathering brings together gourd artists, instructors, students and vendors for hands-on learning and creative exploration.
